Emergency repairs and closure to northbound traffic
A tractor-trailer went overboard on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Thursday, June 22, 2023. The accident occurred at around 1:50 p.m. on a northbound lane of the bridge-tunnel between Virginia Beach and the southernmost island.
The facility has sustained guardrail and curb damage as a result of the incident. CBBT maintenance crews are responding to make emergency repairs, and the facility is currently closed to northbound traffic.
CBBT police are still investigating what caused the accident, with Virginia Beach Police, Virginia Beach Fire & Rescue and US Coast Guard assisting in their efforts.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is an important vehicular toll crossing that provides direct access between Hampton Roads, Virginia and Eastern Shore of Virginia. It spans for four lanes across a distance of 20 miles over lower Chesapeake Bay.
The bridge-tunnel is operated by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District under governance by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission.
