Transport Bus Crash with Semi-Truck Injures 9 in Iola, Kansas

A transport bus carrying residents from the Topeka Correctional Facility (TCF) was involved in a crash with a semi-truck, resulting in injuries to nine people. The incident occurred when the bus turned onto Highway 169 from Oregon Road in Iola just before 1 a.m. on Thursday.
According to David Thompson, spokesperson for the State of Kansas, the TCF residents had completed their shift at the Russell Stover plant in Iola and were en route back to Topeka when the accident took place. The bus was carrying a total of 21 TCF residents at the time.
The bus driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in Kansas City for treatment. Among the eight injured residents, three suffered bone fractures while another may have experienced a punctured lung. Fortunately, all eight are expected to make a full recovery.
Thompson also mentioned that there were no reported injuries among the remaining 13 TCF residents who were onboard but unaffected by the crash. These individuals were transported back to their worksite and subsequently taken to an area hospital for assessment as a precautionary measure.
In light of this incident, authorities from both the Kansas Department of Corrections and local law enforcement agencies are collaborating to determine what caused this unfortunate collision between the transport bus and semi-truck.
