All lanes of Interstate 40 near the Avent Ferry Road bridge south of downtown Raleigh were shut down for hours on Tuesday morning due to a crash involving a truck. The incident caused a morning slowdown that spread to surface streets in Cary and Raleigh.
The truck's load, which appeared to be mostly trash, spread across both eastbound and westbound lanes, causing backups throughout the morning. At one point, delays on I-40 westbound were estimated at about 54 minutes. The eastbound side of I-40 saw heavy backups right around the Cary Towne Boulevard interchange through I-440. On the westbound side, delays formed near Hammond Road.
According to the police, there were no injuries reported, and no toxic or dangerous chemicals were involved in the spill. The driver of the truck was cited with failure to maintain his lane, but the police did not release the name of the driver or the company that owned the truck.
