Truck Crashes into Reston Parkway Bridge

Bridge sustained damage, no injuries reported
According to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, a driver has been charged with failure to pay full time and attention after their truck crashed into the Reston Parkway bridge at the Dulles Toll Road on Monday morning. The incident occurred on eastbound Dulles Toll Road and Reston Parkway exit 12.
Upon investigation, it was determined that while traveling eastbound on the entrance ramp, the truck's hydraulic hoist hit the underside of the bridge. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, as of Friday afternoon, the exact cause of the crash remained undetermined.
The Reston Parkway bridge sustained damage to a couple of the bridge deck beams and other elements. In order to prevent further damage and ensure safety, VDOT closed off the left lane of southbound Reston Parkway.
Responsibility for maintaining certain parts of the bridge is shared between VDOT and MWAA. According to Liggitt, MWAA is responsible for repairing this specific damaged portion. "We have been actively working with them to facilitate repair and set a repair timeline," he explained.
In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion in light of ongoing repairs, VDOT plans to temporarily repurpose the right-only ramp lane into both a right turn lane and through lane next week. Additionally, their operations engineering team has been monitoring signals for both ramps as well as Sunset Hills Road in order to minimize queues.
