Two people killed, one injured

Families in Shelton, Washington are mourning the loss of two individuals who were tragically killed by a rogue tire on Thursday morning. The incident occurred on Interstate 5 in Lakewood, leaving another person injured and hospitalized.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the crash took place around 5:30 a.m. when a loose tire crashed through the windshield of a commuter van carrying eight passengers. The group was commuting from Shelton to an area near Enumclaw for seasonal work involving trimming pine branches for wreaths ahead of the Christmas season.

Martin Mendoza Matias, aged 55, was among those killed in the crash. He is a husband and father to four children. Martin was sitting in one of the middle seats when the tire unexpectedly smashed through the center of the windshield.

Martin Mendoza Matias was known within both his church community and Shelton's small Guatemalan community as someone with a great sense of humor who actively participated in various activities. He was also eagerly awaiting becoming a grandfather soon after this tragic event unfolded.

Another victim identified as Denilso Tomas Lopez sadly lost their life too at just 18 years old.

The origin of the rogue tire remains unclear; however, authorities suspect it may have come from an unsecured load rather than falling off another vehicle or axle while traveling down the road.

The Washington State Patrol is actively seeking witnesses who can provide information about the crash and help identify where the loose tire originated. While an unsecured load is considered a misdemeanor in Washington state, depending on further investigation findings, more serious charges may be brought against those responsible for this tragic incident.

Authorities are still conducting their investigation into this devastating accident; therefore, it remains uncertain when they will conclude their inquiries. In the meantime, motorists should expect delays on northbound I-5 approaching Bridgeport Way due to lane closures caused by this incident.
