Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) have arrested two men after a high-speed chase on the Pennsylvania Turnpike through Somerset and Bedford counties. The suspects, identified as Raleigh Joseph Sykes, 25, and Khylee E. Cole, 20, both from Maryland, are facing charges of receiving stolen property and possession with intent drug charges.
According to PSP reports, the chase began around 6:20 am on June 5 when an on-duty state trooper saw a blue Chevy Silverado speeding past the South Somerset Travel Plaza. The trooper followed the vehicle heading east but had difficulty trying to see its plates due to a tinted cover.
The police activated their lights but instead of stopping; the Silverado started to speed up. At one point during the pursuit in closed lanes in a work zone where speeds were limited at 55 miles per hour., it reached over 82 miles per hour even after calling for backup from another police cruiser.
Documents show that PSP used spike strips to try and stop the Silverado which hit concrete barriers before continuing through tool booths with four flat tires before finally being stopped by using PIT maneuver where Business meets ramp 220 in Bedford County.
A search of the vehicle found half a pound of marijuana, Hydrochloride drugs worth roughly $2,300 along with numerous ID cards and registrations. Troopers also noted that this thirty-two-mile chase saw speeds reaching up to100 miles per hour while ultimately discovering that this car was stolen out of Maryland.
Cole who was driving is facing additional charges including reckless endangerment fleeing accident causing damage resisting arrest among other lesser traffic charges while Sykes has been charged with receiving stolen property and possession with intent drug charges
Both men were arraigned following their arrests and placed in Somerset County Prison; bail for Sykes was set at $50k while Cole’s was set at $100k.
