Two fatalities, minor injuries to Sponholz

Two people from Advance, North Carolina tragically lost their lives in a car crash on Sunday. Among the victims was Stephanie Schneggenburger, a beloved teacher at Wallburg Elementary School in Davison County Schools.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:25 p.m. on U.S. 221 near Woodstown Road in Ashe County, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Nicholas Sponholz, 21, reportedly crossed the median in his vehicle and collided with another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Bruce Schneggenburger, 56, and Stephanie Schneggenburger, 55 - both residents of Advance - were passengers in the vehicle struck by Sponholz's car. Tragically, they succumbed to their injuries sustained during the collision.

Stephanie Schneggenburger had been working as a first-grade teacher at Wallburg Elementary School since March 2000. Her passing is an immense loss not only for her family but also for her friends, colleagues within Davidson County Schools, and the entire community that she served diligently throughout her career.

Sponholz suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash but now faces charges of two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to maintain lane control.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol noted that heavy rain was present at the time of the accident, which may have contributed to the collision. Investigations into the crash are ongoing.

Our thoughts go out to the families and friends affected by this tragic incident.
