Two teens killed, others injured
Two teenagers tragically lost their lives in a devastating crash that occurred on Friday night in Union County, Iowa. The incident took place when a vehicle carrying four passengers failed to stop at a stop sign on 190th Street at U.S. Highway 34 near Creston. As a result, another vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 34 collided with the car on its driver's side, causing both vehicles to veer into a nearby ditch.
According to the crash report, Halsie Lynn Barnes, aged 19 and from Tingley, as well as Ella Jo Leonard, also 19 and from Winterset, succumbed to their injuries sustained during the collision. The report further states that the two other women who were in the same car suffered critical injuries and were immediately transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Although both occupants of the second vehicle were injured in the accident, they did not require hospitalization for their injuries.
Shockingly, neither Barnes nor Leonard was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact according to information provided by the Iowa State Patrol.
The loss of these young lives serves as an unfortunate reminder about road safety measures such as wearing seatbelts while driving or riding in vehicles. Authorities continue to investigate this tragic incident further.
