Multiple Lanes Closed on I-45 North Freeway After Hazmat Spill Involving Two Vehicles
Multiple northbound lanes of the I-45 North Freeway in Houston, Texas are closed at West Gulf Bank Road after a crash involving a tanker truck. The incident was verified by Houston Transtar as a hazmat spill involving two vehicles that occurred at 4:53 a.m. on Friday.
As of 10:30 a.m., only two lanes were getting by, causing major backups for drivers headed north towards The Woodlands, Spring and Conroe. Drivers can take the Hardy Toll Road as an alternate route.
According to Houston fire officials, the accident involved a large U-Haul truck slamming into the back of the tanker truck. A man, woman and their cat were in the U-Haul at the time of impact.
It reportedly took HFD an hour to get the male driver out of the vehicle. He and his female passenger were taken to an area hospital in stable condition while crews worked to clear up hazardous materials from both vehicles.
Investigators believe that either slow-moving or broken down conditions caused this collision between these two heavy-duty commercial vehicles which has resulted in significant traffic delays throughout much of northern Houston today.
