Shootout and crash
A violent shootout occurred in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood on Sunday morning, resulting from a stolen car. The incident began in the parking lot of the Jewel Osco located at 100 West 87th Street. According to police, the owner of a Dodge Durango, aged 31, spotted his stolen vehicle and approached it. However, upon his approach, the individuals inside the car opened fire.
In self-defense, the car owner returned fire as he was also armed. Following this exchange of gunfire, the assailants fled from the scene but eventually crashed into a nearby T-Mobile store. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles involved.
The entire incident unfolded around 8:50 AM on Sunday morning. Remarkably, despite having their vehicle stolen just last week and being involved in an intense shootout shortly after locating it again, police confirmed that the car owner possessed a concealed carry license.
During their escape attempt on foot after crashing into T-Mobile, one of those inside suffered gunshot wounds to their neck and shoulder. This individual is currently listed in critical condition as of Sunday evening and is identified as a 23-year-old male. Additionally injured was a teenager who was present in the vehicle during the crash; they were also hospitalized for treatment.
One person managed to flee from authorities by evading capture on foot following the crash; however, law enforcement continues its investigation with hopes of locating them soon.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported aside from those directly involved in this chaotic series of events. Police recovered three firearms at or near the scene.
