Investigation underway
Houston police are currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred early Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a woman who may have been homeless. The accident took place in the 5600 block of Gessner Road.
According to investigators from the Houston Police Department, at approximately 4:55 a.m., the woman was lying in an unlit parking lot outside a restaurant wearing dark clothing. It was during this time that a garbage truck entered the lot and tragically ran over her.
Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, including paramedics from the Houston Fire Department. Sadly, they pronounced the victim dead upon their arrival. Authorities are withholding her identity until it can be verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene following the incident and cooperated with law enforcement officials. After conducting tests, it was determined that there was no impairment involved on part of the driver. They were subsequently questioned and later released.
As investigations continue into this heartbreaking accident, authorities urge pedestrians to exercise caution when navigating through poorly lit areas or near heavy machinery such as garbage trucks. This serves as a reminder for both drivers and pedestrians alike to remain vigilant while on public roads to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in our community.
Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this devastating event as we await further updates from law enforcement regarding their ongoing investigation into this unfortunate incident.
