One Dead and Four Injured in Wrong-Way Collision on Major Freeway in Ahwatukee
On Sunday afternoon, a wrong-way collision occurred on a major freeway in Ahwatukee, resulting in one death and four injuries. The Phoenix Fire Department received the call around 5 p.m., reporting that five cars were involved with one vehicle overturned.
According to reports, five patients were taken to the hospital following the accident. Among them was a 12-year-old girl who is currently listed as being in extremely critical condition, a nine-year-old girl who is also listed as being in critical condition, a 20-year-old woman and another adult both of whom are also said to be critically injured. A 33-year-old man was reported to be stable.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety has confirmed that they are investigating this incident as a wrong-way collision. On Monday morning, DPS spokespersons announced that one person had died from their injuries sustained during the crash; they were identified as being a passenger inside the wrong-way car.
Further information regarding this tragic event is expected to be released later today by authorities.
Following the accident's occurrence, eastbound lanes of Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway near 24th Street were closed for several hours while crews worked at clearing up debris from the scene. However, all lanes have since reopened except for one right lane which remains blocked at present.
