Two fatalities

A tragic wrong-way collision occurred early Thursday morning on the Long Island Expressway (LIE), resulting in the death of two individuals. The incident has raised numerous questions regarding how it happened, leaving authorities searching for answers.

The crash took place just before 1 a.m., prompting the closure of all westbound lanes and the eastbound HOV lane between exits 63 and 62. After several hours, these sections have since been reopened to traffic.

According to police reports, the innocent driver of an Acura, identified as 32-year-old Jose Ferreira from West Babylon, was traveling westbound when he was struck head-on by a Chevrolet Silverado in the middle lane at the Holtsville-Farmingville border. The driver of the pickup truck, Thomas Raimondo from Holbrook, aged 61, was determined to be driving in the wrong direction.

Authorities are currently uncertain about where Raimondo entered the LIE incorrectly or his origin prior to entering. Investigations into these details are ongoing.

Just one day prior to this tragedy in Roslyn on Wednesday, another wrong-way collision occurred on Northern State Parkway; fortunately no fatalities were reported in that incident.
