Police have cited 16-year-old Jonathan McCaffery, son of Iowa Basketball coach Fran McCaffery, as the driver who hit and killed Iowa National Guard soldier Corey Hite. The incident occurred on May 22nd at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Kennedy Parkway in Iowa City.
Authorities responded to the crash at approximately 4:16 p.m., where they found Hite, a 45-year-old Cedar Rapids resident, critically injured. Despite efforts to save him, Hite succumbed to his injuries.
McCaffery has been charged with Failure to Yield to a Pedestrian in a Crosswalk. According to Iowa law, this misdemeanor offense resulting in death carries penalties including a $1,000 fine and suspension of the driver's license for up to 180 days.
In response to the tragic accident involving their son, Fran and Margaret McCaffery released a statement expressing their grief and condolences towards Hite's family. They stated that investigators informed them it was an unavoidable accident with no evidence suggesting distracted driving on their son's part.
According to the McCafferys' statement, another vehicle had waved Hite into the crosswalk while he was jogging when their son's vehicle struck him. Unfortunately, Sgt. First Class Corey Hite passed away two weeks later due to his injuries sustained in the collision.
The grieving parents expressed devastation over this tragedy and extended their deepest sympathies towards Hite's family during this difficult time. As they continue processing these events and supporting their son through this ordeal, they have chosen not to provide further comments at present.
