Derrick Thompson faces a potential maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each count of vehicular homicide, as well as federal charges of possession of drugs and a firearm as a felon.

A man has been charged with five counts of vehicular homicide and another five for fleeing the scene after a tragic accident in Mankato, Minnesota. Derrick Thompson, 27, is facing potential maximum sentences of 10 years in prison for each count. The Minnesota District court also added federal charges of possession of drugs and a firearm as a felon.

According to reports from the U.S. attorney's office, on June 16th police saw a black Cadillac SUV speeding along I-35 before exiting onto Lake Street and running a red light. Five young women were hit by the car allegedly operated by Thompson; none survived the crash.

Thompson fled the scene but was later arrested and taken to hospital. Court documents reveal that police found three bags containing over 21-thousand fentanyl pills, 14 grams of powder fentanyl, and 35 grams of cocaine inside his vehicle alongside a loaded Glock pistol with an extended magazine.

This isn't Thompson's first run-in with law enforcement; he has prior felony convictions from a hit-and-run incident while fleeing police in California back in 2020.

Derrick Thompson will make his first court appearance at Hennepin courthouse on Friday, June 23rd.
