Officer Marcus Winkfield died at the scene, while the driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries.

A tragic incident occurred in Sacramento County, California on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officer. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), 53-year-old Marcus Winkfield was driving his 2002 Honda Civic eastbound on State Route 104 at approximately 5:19 a.m. At the same time, a 2016 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that Winkfield's Honda was accelerating at an excessive speed, crossing double yellow lines, and even going against traffic through a curve. Tragically, this reckless behavior led to a head-on collision between Winkfield's vehicle and the Dodge.

Regrettably, Marcus Winkfield lost his life in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge Ram, who is 35 years old, complained of back pain but declined further medical treatment.

The CDCR expressed their deep sorrow over Officer Winkfield's sudden passing. In an official statement released following the accident, they said:

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Officer Marcus Winkfield, 53 this morning. Today, at approximately 5:15 am., Officer Winkfield was involved in a car accident while on his way to work succumbing to his injuries on scene."

Winkfield had been an exemplary officer serving as an integral part of Mule Creek State Prison. The CDCR extended their heartfelt condolences to his family members, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. To support staff affected by this tragedy within Mule Creek State Prison community services such as peer support have been activated.

Authorities have confirmed that alcohol or drugs do not appear to be contributing factors in causing this fatal crash.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder for all drivers about practicing safe driving habits and adhering to traffic regulations diligently.
