One fatality, Duke Energy driver uninjured
A tragic incident occurred during severe storms in the Triangle area overnight, resulting in the death of an individual after their car collided with a Duke Energy truck. The Duke Energy truck had pulled over on Six Forks Road near Sandy Forks Road to address a power outage when the accident took place.
The driver of the white sedan, identified as 47-year-old Ryan Fox, crashed into the parked Duke Energy truck. Investigators suspect that Fox was impaired at the time of the collision. While the Duke Energy driver escaped unharmed, Fox sustained injuries that proved fatal and passed away at a local hospital.
Following this unfortunate event, Duke Energy released a statement emphasizing the importance of adhering to statewide regulations known as "Move Over" laws. These laws require drivers to yield space and exercise caution when approaching utility work vehicles or law enforcement vehicles engaged in traffic stops.
Duke Energy's statement highlighted their concern for employee safety: "Keeping our teams safe in the field is extremely important. On numerous occasions, distracted drivers who are members of the public have entered our established work zones, which presents one of the most significant hazards for our employees."
The company further explained that North Carolina's Department of Public Safety "Move Over" law applies not only to law enforcement vehicles but also extends its protection to utility vehicles like those operated by Duke Energy employees while restoring electrical service during unplanned events such as hurricanes or ice storms.
Drivers were urged by Duke Energy to exercise caution and follow specific guidelines when encountering their crews working on roadsides: "Drivers should approach cautiously when they see our crews working and change lanes away from utility vehicles on multi-lane highways or slow down on two-lane highways while maintaining a safe speed."
This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder for all motorists to remain vigilant during severe weather conditions and be mindful of emergency response personnel and utility workers operating alongside roadways.
