Two teens were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Significant damage was done to the building.
The Amherst Police Department has announced that the Memorial Day parade in Ohio will be rerouted following a car crash early Saturday morning. The incident occurred when a vehicle crashed into Barra Restaurant on Park Avenue at around 4:30 am, causing significant damage to the building. Two teenagers were in the car and were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have confirmed that impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
Barra Owner Aaron Byington expressed relief that no one was seriously hurt but noted that "buildings can be rebuilt." A structural engineer will assess the damage on Tuesday, but for now, the restaurant expects to remain closed until repairs are completed.
Due to the accident's impact on parking and road closures, organizers of Monday's Memorial Day Parade have had to make changes. Parade organizer Gerri Rice said they had put together a plan as how they would just reroute it by leaving it as it is and bumping it back one block. The new route starts at High School on Washington St., southbound to Forest St., right turn westbound onto Park Ave., left turn southbound onto Church St., then eastbound onto Tenney Ave before concluding in green space at northeast corner of Church St. and Tenney Ave.
Parking restrictions will also apply during this period; parking will only be permitted on Park Ave west of Church Street while City Lots between Park Avenue and Tenney Ave will experience restricted access.
Despite these changes due to unforeseen circumstances, nothing else about Monday’s event lineup or timing has changed—the memorial service still takes place after the parade ends at Amherst City Hall grounds.
