Car crashes into Smithfield Subway, killing one and injuring five

One person dead, four others injured
An investigation is underway after a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop in Smithfield, Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon. The incident resulted in one fatality and five injuries.
According to Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini, first responders arrived at the Apple Valley Mall on Putnam Pike to find the car inside the restaurant with two people pinned underneath it. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and four others were rushed to nearby hospitals.
A video from inside a nail salon next door shows the moment of impact as well as the owner jumping back from her doorway upon hearing it. The cause of the crash remains unknown; however, Quattrini said that it appears that "the man behind the wheel was driving at a high rate of speed through the parking lot."
The Subway and neighboring Planet Fitness both suffered significant damage in this accident. As such, both businesses will remain closed until further notice.
