A tragic incident occurred on Saturday night in Marion County, Oregon, resulting in the death of a local man. According to Oregon State Police, the fatal accident took place on Oregon Route 164, also known as the Jefferson Highway.

The victim was identified as Harley Auten, a 42-year-old resident of Jefferson. Auten was riding his bicycle in the southbound bike lane on the highway when a Dodge RAM 3500 pickup truck driven by Brian Hammons turned onto the highway from eastbound Talbot Road SE. The collision between Auten and Hammons' vehicle occurred at the intersection.

After being struck by the pickup truck, Auten suffered severe injuries and was immediately rushed to Salem Hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Oregon State Police revealed that following the crash, Hammons left the scene before medical personnel arrived. However, he turned himself in to investigators on Sunday after realizing what had transpired. As a result of his actions leaving without providing assistance or information about himself to authorities at first contact with emergency responders or law enforcement officers present during their response time frame; He has been charged with hit and run.

Hammons is now being held at Marion County Jail awaiting further legal proceedings related to this case. On Monday morning he appeared before court where an arraignment hearing took place setting bail amounting $20k dollars for his release while investigation continues into this matter.
