A Macon County sergeant lost his life in a devastating early morning crash on Saturday. Sergeant William Cherry was on duty around 12:30 a.m. when the incident occurred on Highway 10, north of Lafayette.
According to Chief Deputy Kyle Petty, Devin Slayton, a 24-year-old Tennessee resident, crossed the center line while driving a 2013 Ford F150 and collided head-on with Sergeant Cherry's vehicle. The impact proved fatal for Sgt. Cherry, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 55 years old.
Following the crash, Slayton was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries; however, no updates have been provided regarding his condition.
An initial investigation conducted by the Tennessee Highway Patrol revealed that neither Sgt. Cherry nor Slayton were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. THP is leading further investigations into this tragic incident to determine additional details surrounding its cause.
The Macon County Sheriff's Office expressed their grief and shared information about the incident via their Facebook page on Saturday morning:

They requested prayers and support from everyone during this difficult time and emphasized how much Sgt. Cherry would be missed by both his colleagues at the Sheriff's Office and those he served within Macon County.
