Memphis Man Charged with Vehicular Homicide and Reckless Driving
A man has been charged in connection to a fatal car accident that occurred on Latham Street yesterday. According to an affidavit, Tony Williams, 28, was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole and tree. The passenger in the car, Zaccheus Graves, was ejected from the vehicle and later died at Regional One Hospital.
Police investigations revealed that Williams had attempted to avoid a metal covering on the street which was placed over a hole by utility workers. In doing so, he swerved into oncoming traffic before attempting to move back into his lane but over-corrected his car instead. He then struck a curb before hitting the utility pole and tree.
The affidavit also stated that Williams was driving above the speed limit during wet/rainy conditions without having a valid driver's license or proof of insurance. Furthermore, it was discovered that the car wasn't properly registered as its tags belonged to another vehicle.
As such, Williams has been charged with vehicular homicide along with reckless driving among other crimes related to this incident.
