Man Fatally Struck on Interstate 805 Identified by San Diego Medical Examiner's Office
The man who was tragically killed in a collision on the northbound Interstate 805 has been identified as Richard Anthony Rollo, a 61-year-old resident of San Diego. The San Diego Medical Examiner's office confirmed his identity and notified his next of kin.
The incident took place around noon on Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Rollo had pulled over to the shoulder of I-805 after being involved in a minor crash with a Freightliner semi-truck that resulted in property damage only.
Authorities stated that Rollo exited his Acura sedan, which was parked near the State Route 52 on-ramp transition. Meanwhile, the Freightliner semi-truck had moved into the gore area between the main lanes of I-805 and the connector ramp.
Rollo approached the driver of the semi-truck by crossing over from his vehicle across several transition lanes. After discussing the earlier crash, he began making his way back towards his car. Tragically, while attempting to cross into lane #1 of SR-52 on-ramp, he was struck by a white Ford pick-up truck and thrown into lane #4 of I-805.
Medical personnel arrived at approximately 12:17 p.m., but unfortunately declared Rollo dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported during this incident.
Law enforcement closed off both right lanes along northbound I-805 south of Governor Drive as well as westbound SR-52 on-ramp for two hours while they conducted an investigation into this tragic accident.
The CHP San Diego area office is currently investigating both the cause of this collision and its sequence of events.
