Driver did not survive

A tragic accident occurred on Monday, July 24th, when a Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) driver lost his life in a single vehicle crash just west of Mount Vernon on State Route V.

The incident was reported to Lawrence County E-911 shortly before 1 p.m., prompting the immediate response of emergency services including Mount Vernon Fire and Mercy Ambulance. The Missouri State Highway Patrol was also notified and arrived at the scene.

According to Troopers who were present at the crash site, it was determined that the accident involved only one vehicle. A MoDOT oil tanker traveling west on State Route V veered off the road to the right and overturned. Tragically, the driver did not survive.

In order to investigate further and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash, MCIU No.3 (Major Crash Investigation Unit) was summoned for assistance. Preliminary information from MSHP's preliminary crash report can be seen in a screenshot.

The deceased has been identified as Charles E. Toler, a 38-year-old resident of Dadeville, Missouri who worked for MoDOT. Toler had been operating a 2006 International truck equipped with an oil tank at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin after all efforts to save him proved unsuccessful. His next-of-kin have already been informed about this devastating loss.

Following standard protocol in such incidents involving hazardous materials spills, Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were contacted regarding an oil leak resulting from damage sustained by Toler's tanker during impact with its surroundings near where it crashed into off-road terrain adjacent to State Route V. Fortunately, there is no immediate threat posed to any nearby waterways due to this spillage.
