Everyone is expected to survive.
Two pedestrians were injured on Saturday morning after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a busy grocery store in Arlington, Massachusetts. The incident occurred at around 10:15 a.m. at the Stop and Shop located at 905 Massachusetts Avenue.
According to reports, an 87-year-old man from Belmont was driving his Mercury Marquis when he struck a parked SUV and pushed it into the front of the store where it hit a flower display. As he began to move his vehicle, he hit two pedestrians - a 61-year-old woman from Arlington and a 70-year-old man from Randolph.
Both victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with one of them being in critical condition according to police reports. The driver was also transported to hospital for medical attention.
Police are still investigating what caused the accident as they try to determine whether it was due to mechanical failure or driver error or if there was any medical emergency involved. "We don't know if it was a medical emergency, mechanical failure or if it was driver error," said Sgt Stephen Porciello adding that "time will tell."
The incident happened during peak hours on Saturday morning when many people were out shopping given good weather conditions and holiday weekend celebrations which made things even more chaotic than usual.
The parking lot remained closed following this incident as investigators continued their work making markings on pavement within yellow police tape surrounding both vehicles involved in this crash along with visible damage done onto storefronts including flowers strewn about from the flower display that was hit.
An investigation by Arlington Police Department is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
