Propane Tank Explosion Shuts Down Part of I-59 in Pearl River County

Part of I-59 in Pearl River County, Mississippi is currently closed in both directions following a serious accident involving an 18-wheeler carrying propane tanks. The vehicle caught fire, leading to explosions from the tanks it was transporting.

The incident occurred near the 28 mile marker, between exits 27 and 29, just north of Highway 26. Shawn Wise, Director of the Pearl River County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), reported that the exploding cylinders have been propelled up to a quarter-mile away from the crash site. Additionally, the fire has spread to both sides of the highway.

Fortunately, initial reports indicate that the driver of the 18-wheeler appears to be unharmed but is receiving medical attention as a precautionary measure. There were no other vehicles involved in this collision and no other drivers sustained injuries.

Authorities urged motorists to avoid this area while emergency crews worked diligently to contain and extinguish the blaze.
