A train carrying hazardous materials has derailed in Minnesota for the second time within two months. The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 4:30 p.m. near Lancaster, a town located about 10 miles south of the Canadian border. According to Canadian Pacific (CPKC), 24 cars on a freight train went off the rails, some of which were carrying hazardous materials.
However, CPKC confirmed that there are no leaks as of late Wednesday night and no one has been reported hurt. Additionally, there are no waterways in the area affected by the derailment.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz tweeted about the incident late Wednesday evening and stated that state officials are working with local emergency managers to ensure everything is under control. Experts are on their way to survey the site and make sure the community has everything they need.
This is not an isolated event as several other similar incidents have happened recently across different states in America. In mid-April, a BNSF train derailed in Raymond, southwestern Minnesota spilling ethanol and causing fire leading to evacuations while another BNSF train derailed days later in southwestern Wisconsin with two cars ending up floating down Mississippi River containing lithium-ion batteries.
In February this year, Norfolk Southern Train also derailed in East Palestine Ohio where eleven cars contained hazardous materials including vinyl chloride resulting into five-day evacuation of residents due to fires caused by several ignited cars.
The cause behind these frequent accidents remains unclear but it raises concerns over safety measures taken during transportation of such dangerous goods via railroads across America.
