Two deaths, minor injuries
A tragic accident occurred on Friday morning in Richland County, Illinois, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. The incident involved a semi-truck and took place along U.S. 50 near Olney.
According to the Illinois State Police, the crash happened at approximately 6:50 a.m. on July 14th in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 50 just west of North Cottage Hill Road. The victims have been identified as Justin A. Lynn, aged 22, and Colten H. Stewart, aged 24; both were residents of Cisne, Illinois.
The police report states that three vehicles were involved: a box truck, a semi-truck with trailer, and a Chevrolet pickup truck - all traveling eastbound on U.S. 50 near the entrance to a construction zone where workers were controlling traffic using handheld stop signs.
At the time of the accident, both the box truck and pickup truck had come to a stop due to traffic ahead. Unfortunately, it was reported that the driver of the semi-truck failed to notice this halt and did not slow down accordingly. As a result, his vehicle collided with the back of the pickup truck before pushing it into the box truck.
Tragically for Lynn and Stewart who were inside their pickup truck when it caught fire upon impact - they succumbed to their injuries at scene.
Jonathan J. Wilson from Mississippi was driving behind them when he crashed into their vehicle; he sustained minor injuries but is expected to recover fully. Wilson has also been cited by authorities for failure to reduce speed in order to avoid an accident.
Emergency services arrived promptly at scene following reports from witnesses who dialed emergency services immediately after witnessing this horrific event unfold.
Both occupants within box trucks suffered minor injuries during this collision; they are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The driver is a 32-year-old man from Clay City, Illinois, and his passenger is a 23-year-old from Louisville, Illinois.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of this devastating crash.
