Severe injuries sustained in the crash at Jefferson and 26th
South Bend, Indiana - The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) is currently investigating two hit-and-run crashes that are believed to be related. The incidents occurred in South Bend on Sunday afternoon.
According to officials from the South Bend Police Department, they received a call regarding a crash at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and 26th Street around 4:30 p.m. The collision resulted in a serious injury. Tim Spencer, spokesperson for the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT), stated that this incident originated as a domestic situation between a husband and wife at the Prosper Apartments before escalating into public view.
Reports indicate that during the altercation, a black Dodge Charger driven by a man and a black GMC SUV driven by a woman were involved in multiple collisions while traveling westbound on Jefferson Boulevard. As a result of these collisions, the GMC was forced off the road and struck an innocent pedestrian walking along the sidewalk.
Following this initial crash, the male driver of the Dodge Charger fled from the scene and subsequently became involved in another car accident at McKinley Avenue and Twyckenham Drive around 4:45 p.m. Witnesses informed officers that they observed a black Dodge Charger colliding with two parked vehicles as well as one vehicle within an intersection. Remarkably, this vehicle matched the description provided for the suspect's car involved in the first hit-and-run incident.
After abandoning his vehicle at McKinley Avenue and Twyckenham Drive, it is reported that he fled on foot down East Madison Street. Numerous calls were made to authorities reporting sightings of an individual jumping fences through backyards within close proximity to where he left his car behind. Eventually, police located him hiding among some bushes nearby and promptly detained him.
Both suspects have been taken to hospital where their blood will be drawn according to protocol established by law enforcement agencies when severe injuries are sustained in a crash. As of now, no fatalities have been reported.
The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) has taken charge of the investigation due to the severity of the injuries incurred during the initial collision at Jefferson Boulevard and 26th Street. Authorities continue their efforts to gather evidence and piece together the events leading up to these hit-and-run crashes.
