Two Pedestrians Killed in Riverside Pickup Truck Crash

A 17-year-old male Perris resident was detained after he allegedly drove his truck into two pedestrians, killing both, in Riverside late Sunday night. The incident occurred at Van Buren Boulevard and Challen Avenue at about 11:48 p.m. Sunday.
According to initial reports, the driver of a 2011 GMC pickup truck was driving southbound on Van Buren when he lost control of the vehicle and struck two pedestrians who were walking their dog. The victims were found unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck also hit a utility pole at the intersection, taking out a traffic light. The driver reportedly suffered serious internal injuries and was hospitalized.
Police said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash but noted that the suspect did not have a driver's license. Investigators believe that the teen's parents are out of the country, and he had been staying with relatives.
The victims were both in their twenties; one victim was from Riverside while the other was not identified as they await family notification.
The investigation into this case is ongoing as authorities work to determine what led up to this tragic event.
