Portion of I-95 collapsed, highway closed in both directions
A vehicle fire caused a large portion of an elevated section of Interstate 95 to collapse in Philadelphia, leading to the closure of the highway in both directions. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at around 6:30 am local time. According to officials, emergency crews responded to reports of heavy fire from a vehicle or vehicles under the interstate.
Video footage from the scene showed a massive slab covering an entire section of northbound lanes collapsed onto the surface roadway in northeast Philadelphia. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries.
Capt. Derek Bowmer of the Philadelphia Fire Department said that while early reports indicated that the vehicle may have been a tanker truck, it had not yet been confirmed. He added that "the northbound lanes were gone and southbound lanes were 'compromised' due to heat from the fire." Additionally, runoff from the fire or perhaps compromised gas lines was causing explosions underground.
Officials are also concerned about environmental impacts as runoff could flow into nearby Delaware River. Dominick Mireles, director of Philadelphia's Office of Emergency Management stated that "today's going to be a long day" and with 95 northbound closed and southbound questionable," it will take even longer than expected for cleanup efforts."
The emergency management office has urged people to avoid this area as other streets remain closed for response purposes. They also plan on launching drones soon for damage assessment purposes.
This is still an ongoing story; more updates will follow as they become available.
