Woman Known as 'Neighborhood Grandma' Killed in Tragic Accident in Houston

A woman tragically lost her life after being struck by an 18-wheeler in northeast Houston. The incident occurred at the intersection of North Wayside Drive and Ley Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, identified by her grandchildren as Lisa Smith, was hit by the truck around 2 p.m. According to the Houston Police Department's vehicular crimes division, the 18-wheeler was traveling west on Ley Road when it stopped in the left turn lane, waiting for a change in traffic lights. It was at this moment that Smith stepped in front of the stationary truck. Unfortunately, she was not using a crosswalk at the time.
When the light turned green, the driver felt something unusual coming from his back axle and immediately stopped. To his horror, he discovered that he had hit Smith. Despite efforts to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries.
Houston police have determined that Smith is at fault for crossing outside of a designated crosswalk while the truck had right-of-way. Sergeant Sean Jewell described it as a tragic accident and emphasized how crucial sidewalks are for pedestrian safety.
Smith's kindhearted nature and positive attitude touched many lives within her community. Lashon Williams shared how frequently he rode the bus with Smith and praised her ability to uplift others during difficult times.
