Indiana State Trooper Aaron N. Smith Killed in Pursuit of Stolen Car

Trooper Smith died from his injuries
Officials with the Indiana State Police are mourning the loss of one of their troopers who tragically died during a police pursuit. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening on Ronald Reagan Parkway, near the west side of Indianapolis.
Trooper Aaron N. Smith, 33, was assisting other officers in pursuing a stolen car when the unfortunate event took place around 8:40 p.m., according to a police news release. In an attempt to deescalate the situation, Smith deployed stop sticks but was struck by the car instead. He sustained critical injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
"This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family. We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Smith's family, friends, and co-workers," expressed Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter.
The suspect driver involved in the crash along with two passengers were also taken to the hospital for treatment; fortunately, their injuries were not life-threatening.
Smith had been serving with the Indiana State Police for nearly five years and hailed from Franklin. He leaves behind his wife as he is remembered by colleagues and loved ones alike.
