Las Vegas Man Killed While Trying to Save Dog Hit by Car

Holtslander died from his injuries the next day
A tragic incident occurred in Las Vegas early Tuesday morning, resulting in the death of a man who was hit by a car while trying to save his dog. The victim has been identified as 58-year-old David Holtslander.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Holtslander was walking his dog near an intersection at around 3:50 a.m. At the same time, a 2023 Nissan Kick was traveling east in that area and approached a green traffic signal.
Based on evidence gathered at the scene, witness statements, and crash video footage, it was determined that Holtslander's dog suddenly darted into the intersection. In an attempt to secure his beloved pet, he stepped in front of the Nissan outside of a marked crosswalk. Tragically, both Holtslander and his dog were struck by the vehicle.
Fortunately, neither the driver nor her passenger sustained any injuries during the incident. The driver remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment according to police reports. Emergency responders were called immediately and transported Holtslander to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center's trauma unit where he was initially listed in critical condition.
Sadly, despite medical efforts, Holtslander succumbed to his injuries on the following day as confirmed by Clark County Office of Coroner and Medical Examiner.
The Collision Investigation Section of Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is currently conducting further investigations into this tragic accident for more details surrounding its cause or any potential contributing factors.
